The Mayor of London’s Regeneration Fund

Nov 30, 2022 | News | 0 comments

In August of 2011, London saw a spate of riots caused by an escalation of events relating to a police shooting.  As people took to the streets their anger turned to violence causing chaos and destruction. Fires destroyed shops, homes and vehicles. Stores were looted and valuable assets stolen. Many were injured and several lost their lives.

The fund was managed on behalf of the Mayor and the London Enterprise Panel by the Regeneration Team. Not only do they promote the growth in London’s town centres, economic centres and high streets, but they research and evaluate them to ensure the investment is being correctly targeted. It also ensures that when an opportunity is identified it will support jobs and economic growth.

The fund is now closed to applications but it has supported many projects since its introduction. The local communities in the London boroughs of Camden, Enfield, Southall, Hackney, Haringey and Croydon have benefitted the most.

Large Scale Regeneration Projects In Key London Boroughs

Large scale capital projects have taken place in Croydon, Haringey and Southwark. In Croydon and Tottenham the investment has stimulated larger regeneration programmes to take place such as the Growth Zone in Croydon. This programme is concentrating on key projects such as transport, schools and community infrastructure and will bring about huge economic benefits to residents and businesses.

To focus on just one area, The London Borough of Croydon received an award of just over £5.6 million to improve the usability of the areas around west Croydon’s intersection for commuters and visitors to the area. It also received just under £1 million to regenerate the New Addington area of Croydon. Five High Streets of Croydon were transformed with a grant of £6.8 million to improve the appearance of them and encourage new visitors to the area.
