Would you Judge a Restaurant by its Toilet?

Dec 7, 2022 | News | 0 comments

We all make snap judgments about things and that’s especially when you are in a restaurant. When you are eating somewhere, you want to feel comfortable that it’s clean and hygienic which, unfortunately, is not always the case.

There are a lot of things that can instantly put you off in a restaurant, like sticky tables or lipsticks on glasses, but a dirty toilet is the worst thing you can discover while you are waiting for your food to arrive.

When you judge a restaurant, you obviously consider the food and the service but even the most incredible food in the world can’t save a restaurant from the bad impression made by a dirty, outdated toilet. But why do we get so obsessed with toilets when we are eating out?

How clean is the restaurant?

Some restaurants really don’t care, and they won’t even try to pretend that they’re clean. Your table will be covered in bits of food and sticky drinks from the last ten people that ate there and the whole place just feels grimy. But most restaurants will at least try to keep up appearances, even if they are a bit slack with the cleaning. If you really want to get a sense of how clean the kitchen is likely to be, take a look in the toilets. Of all the places you need to clean, the toilet is the most important. If they’re not doing that properly, what state is the kitchen in and do you really want to eat anything that is cooked in there?

How organised is the restaurant?

There’s nothing worse than being in a huge restaurant, navigating your way through all the tables to find the toilet, only to find that there are not multiple washroom cubicles, it’s just the one.

So now, desperate for the toilet, you have to queue. If you think about it, this gives a good insight into how organised they are. If they can’t work out that more than one person might want to use the toilet at the same time, are they capable of running a successful restaurant?

Does the restaurant care about its customers?

Nobody wants to eat in a restaurant where they don’t care about their customers. Sometimes, this is obvious because the waiting staff will roll their eyes at every request, but the toilet can also be a giveaway. If the staff can’t be bothered to clean the toilets, don’t expect too much care and attention to go into your food.

Bad toilets can ruin a restaurant’s reputation and guarantee that customers won’t be coming back again. A nice new bathroom with vanity units and separate washroom cubicles drastically improves the experience for the customer.
