Furnishing Secure Environments

When a secure immigration removal facility in West London planned a much-needed refurbishment, not one, but two BRAC businesses fitted the bill.  BRAC Contracts is acting as main contractor on the project, whilst sister company BRAC Projects is focusing on the bespoke fabrication needs that a facility of this kind requires.

As with any secure environment – be that a prison, youth detention centre, some specialist medical facilities, and immigration centres such as this – a refurbishment project is never ‘just’ a refurbishment and special consideration needs to be paid to a host of factors.

First off, whilst safety and durability are central considerations, it is vital that a balance is struck between these elements of function, and the creation of human-centred custodial environments.  No-one wants to create an environment reminiscent of the drab, grey prison facilities lauded by many-a-TV drama over the years.

The reality remains, however, that several factors need to be integrated into the planning, design, manufacture, and installation of furniture to be used in secure facilities such as this.  Amongst those features might be anti-ligature features, special weighting to prevent removal and misuse, and fire retardancy.

For BRAC Projects, the focus at the immigration facility has centred on the design, build and installation of bunk beds and shower privacy doors.

Key considerations have centred on the overall safety of the inmates: it is vital that we eliminate, so far as is practical, any possibility for self-harm and to do this, we use 13 and 20mm solid-grade laminate.

The finished result is one of both security and privacy for the inmates, combined with remaining as aesthetically attractive as possible.
